Random ramblings and musingsRiding with Joe
Riding with my Dad can be an adventure. Here’s a classic tale from 2008 about one exciting afternoon.
What’s your forte?
I can’t believe I didn’t know this. How many people will think I’m an idiot when I say it the “right” way, though?
He who is without sin
When we rush to judge we place ourselves in God’s place. Though the judgement may be just, thanks to grace and a loving God and his Son, we’re spared from that judgement. Glory to God.
The least of these
I think I believe in getting what we deserve; getting that for which we work. I believe in a fundamental “fairness”. I also know that, as my father said, “life isn’t fair”.
I also believe, as a Christian, that I am totally undeserving of the Grace and Forgiveness of a loving Father. God is just, yes, but more important and more essential to my salvation, he is compassionate.
Charlie Moore’s Cat
In our small town of Dyer, there are numerous stories that almost everyone (at least the “old-timers”) knows by heart. Some have spawned phrases that are now part of the local lexicon… The tale of “Charlie Moore’s cat” spawned such a phrase.
Emmanuel; The Prince of Peace and Contradictions
It’s Christmas. We’re celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace. A horrendous tragedy occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. Now we’re arguing about guns, about our rights, about arming teachers, placing heavily armed guards in schools. What would the Prince of Peace think about us now?
Nathan’s Cure for Seasonal Ailments
Several friends have come down with “the crud” in the last few week. Not necessarily the flu, but just a general ick.
In hopes of easing the suffering of others, I’m going to pass on a secret family recipe passed down generation after generation in my family:
Where was God?
How has our society changed so much in 50 years that these violent, atrocious, offensive acts are becoming normal?
Lotteries frustrate me — and prey on the poor
It hurts me to see people spend money they really don’t have on something that’s, charitably, a long shot, less charitably, a “stupid tax”. I am so grateful that Tennessee’s lottery benefits college students, but did state legislators set out to take advantage of the low-income demographic when they brought the lottery to Tennessee?
Lindsay Lohan leads a charmed life I guess
Recently: Lying to police, punching a woman in the meatpacking district. How is Lindsay Lohan not in jail? A summary of her legal troubles.
Dealing with Telemarketers
Where I deal with telemarketers — and even offer one a free watermelon.
Can a Playground Be Too Safe?
Then it occurred to me that as adolescents and adults, we’re told that we need to push ourselves, push our boundaries. Should we allow children to push themselves? To push boundaries? To take risks?
The Queen Has Voicemail!
Have you ever wondered if the queen had a cell phone? She does! And Voicemail! William and Harry helped her set it up — what a laugh!
Something You Didn’t Know about Your Bank
Banking laws enacted after the Great Depression forbid US banks to be closed more than 4 days in a row, hence nearly all time locks meant for US use do not exceed 96 hours.
Episcopal Survey: Keep the Old Hymns
When we think about reaching out to “unchurched” people, how accessible are our services? How relevant are our hymns and songs?
Jesus would love deep fried Chicken, obviously
Look at that greasy, delicious goodness. Just makes me feel more Christian looking at it. And you know Jesus was all about some waffle fries.
Oh the places I’ve been.. June Edition
I go all over creation during the week. According to Google Latitude, this is where I've been in the last 30 days:
I’m always cautious…
honestly, generally State Name + “Gourmet Food” is a euphemistic name for something of which you’d rather not know the real name.
